Who is responsible for this app

Taily is made and published by Bogdan Szarka, an individual developer based in Romania. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation this is the data controller for the app, and can be reached at office.tailyapp@gmail.com.

What we collect

Nothing about you or your pets. Taily has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no crash reporting service. The app makes no network request to us, because we do not operate a server for it to talk to. Not one record, photograph or name reaches us, ever.

There is a single exception, and we would rather name it than leave you to find it. Google's scanning component reports performance measurements about itself to Google, and only when you use the scanner. On Google Play this appears in our Data safety declaration as Diagnostics, under App info and performance. It is set out in full under What the scanning components report to Google.

We could have argued that measurements about a tool are not data about a person, and left it undeclared. We declared it anyway, because you deserve to read the whole list rather than the flattering part of it.

What you store, and where it lives

The information you enter, meaning your pets, their health records, weights, documents, photos, reminders and expenses, is written to storage on your own device and stays there.

• It is not uploaded to us.
• It is not shared with anyone else.
• It is not used for advertising or profiling.
• You can export all of it at any time, or delete it by uninstalling the app.

Device backups

Taily switches Android's automatic cloud backup off. That backup is capped at 25 MB per app, and Taily stores pet photos and scanned certificates, so a backup that silently dropped your documents would be worse than none at all. Nothing of yours is copied to Google Drive.

The backup that does work is the file you export yourself, from Settings, Back up all data. It is free, always available, and it goes wherever you choose to put it.

Camera and photos

Taily never asks for camera permission, and never asks for access to your photo library. It does not need either.

Pictures are chosen through Android's system photo picker, which hands the app only the single image you tapped. Document scanning runs inside Google Play services rather than inside Taily, so the camera is opened by the system, not by us. Only the images you specifically pick or capture are stored, on your device, with the rest of your records.

Notifications and reminders

Reminders are scheduled locally, by Android, on your own device. They are not push notifications: nothing about your pet's care travels through a server in order to be delivered.

To do that, Taily asks Android for three things:

• Show notifications, so a reminder can appear. On Android 13 and later this is a permission you grant; on older versions notifications are on unless you turn them off.
• Schedule exact alarms, so a reminder arrives at the time you chose rather than whenever the system feels like it.
• Know when the phone has restarted, so your reminders are put back in place after a reboot instead of quietly disappearing.

None of these gives the app access to anything about you. The app keeps working without them; it simply cannot remind you on time.

Purchases

If you buy Taily Pro, the purchase is handled entirely by Google Play. We never see your name, card details or billing address. Google tells the app only whether a purchase is active.

Google's components inside the app

Taily includes three pieces of Google software. None is for analytics or advertising, and none sends your records to us.

• Google Play Billing, so you can buy Taily Pro. It talks to Google when you make or restore a purchase, and tells the app only whether a purchase is active.
• ML Kit Document Scanner, which is the scanning screen you see when you photograph a certificate. It runs inside Google Play services, not inside Taily. The first time you use it, Android downloads the scanner from Google, which is a request to Google, not to us. The pages it produces come straight back to your device.
• ML Kit Text Recognition, which reads the text on a scanned certificate so the app can suggest a title and a date. It runs entirely on your device. A vaccination certificate carries your name and your vet's, and sending it to an online text service would turn a convenience into a leak.

Taily also includes an open source library for drawing QR codes. It is code that runs on your device and talks to nobody.

What the scanning components report to Google

There is one thing we have to be straight about, because it is the only data that leaves your device without you asking for it.

Google's own terms for ML Kit state that the ML Kit APIs send metrics about the performance and utilisation of those APIs to Google. That means measurements such as how long a scan took and whether it succeeded. Google uses them to measure performance, debug, maintain and improve the APIs, and to detect abuse.

What that is not: it is not the photograph, not the text on the certificate, not your pet's records, and not anything that identifies you. The image itself is processed on your device and is never uploaded. The metrics describe the tool, not you.

It happens only when you actually use the scanner. If you never scan a document, nothing is reported. Google's handling of it is covered by Google's Privacy Policy, and the terms we are quoting are published at developers.google.com/ml-kit/terms.

Why the app lists internet access

If you look at Taily's permissions on Google Play you will see internet and network access. We would rather explain that than let you wonder.

Those come from the Google components above: the billing library needs to reach Google Play to confirm a purchase, and the document scanner needs to download itself the first time. Your records never travel over that connection. There is nowhere for them to go: we run no server, and the app has no address to send them to.

Children

Taily is a record-keeping tool for pet owners and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.

How long data is kept, and how to delete it

We keep nothing, so there is nothing on our side with a retention period. Your records stay on your device for exactly as long as you want them:

• Delete one record: open it in the app and remove it. It is gone immediately.
• Delete a pet and everything attached to it: Pets, then the pet, then Edit, then Delete.
• Delete everything: uninstall the app. Android removes all of its data with it. You can also use Settings, Apps, Taily, Storage, Clear data.
• Take a copy first: Settings, Back up all data writes a complete file you keep. This is free and always available.

There is nothing to clear from Google Drive, because Taily is excluded from Android's cloud backup.

Withdrawing permission

Notifications can be turned off at any time in Android Settings, Apps, Taily, Notifications. Exact alarms are in the same place, under Alarms and reminders on the phones that offer it. The app keeps working without them; it simply cannot remind you on time until they are granted again.

How your information is protected

Your records are written to Taily's own private storage area on the device. Android keeps that area separate from other apps and protects it with the device's encryption. There is no copy anywhere else, and no server of ours that could be broken into, because we do not run one.

The part that is yours is the device itself: a screen lock is what stops someone who picks up your phone from reading what is in it.

International transfers

None are made by us. Nothing about you or your pets leaves your device, so there is no personal data for us to transfer to another country.

When you tap Share to send a document or a vaccination summary somewhere, it goes to the service you personally chose, under that service's own terms. When you buy Taily Pro, that transaction is between you and Google, under Google's Privacy Policy.

Selling and sharing

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising or any other purpose. We have never done so. There is no advertising identifier, no data broker, and no cross-app tracking in Taily. For readers in California: nothing about you is sold or shared, so there is nothing to opt out of, and Global Privacy Control signals have no personal information to act on. The scanner measurements described above go to Google as part of that tool working, are not tied to you, and are not sold to anyone.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, the CCPA and similar laws you have rights to access, correct, export and delete your personal data. In Taily those rights are satisfied by the app itself rather than by a request to us: the data is on your device, you can read it, change it, export it in full and destroy it at any moment, without asking anyone. We could not produce a copy of your records if you asked, because we do not have one.

If you believe your data has been mishandled you may complain to your national data protection authority.

Changes

If a future version of Taily for Android changes how information is handled, for example by adding optional sync to your own Google account, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the date above will change. Should anything ever start travelling somewhere new, it will be named here first.
